In this tutorial on tournament poker strategy, we will look at chip re buys and add ons. As you shall see, re buy tournaments add a twist that makes it rather different from normal tournament poker.
Re buy is an option to add to or replenish your chip stack in tournament poker. Each tournament has set rules and restrictions for re buys and each one requires its own strategy.
Prize Pool, Re Buys, Add Ons in Tournaments
Consider the money you are spending in light of what you stand to earn. Freerolls usually have small prize pools. If you are going to buy in, you might want to compute how much you are willing to re buy in proportion to the prizes at stake. If you keep re buying where there is no limit, you might need to make it to the final table just to break even. On the other hand, if you want experience and are not after the money, then re buying is a good investment.
With re buys available, you want to play looser since you can re buy. Normally you start tight in tournament poker. But with re buys you can afford to be more aggressive. Play more hands. Call with ace kickers. And go all-in with top pairs or two pairs.
If the tournament poker rules allow you to add on to your existing chip stack eve before you run out, use it to build your stack. Don't wait until you are short-stacked. Play the first hand you can and fold, then you can add on. By establishing chip power early, you can use the size to bully the table.
When you can re buy, play looser since you can always re buy. This is the time to take risks and build as much as possible since you can replenish.
In tournaments with limited re buys, there may be several re buys followed by an add on. During the add on stage, if you have a big stack and an add on would add significantly to your chip stack, say more than 10%, get it. If not, don't bother. But if you are short stacked, obviously you want to get it.
Re buys are a handy weapon in tournament poker. Make the most of them when they are available. Used wisely they can put you on top of the game early on. Good luck!
